Verikalpa - Du sang et de la bière

Il y a quelques semaines, nous avons eu l’immense plaisir d’interviewer Jani Ikonen, membre fondateur et chanteur de Verikalpa (avec la participation exceptionnelle de son chat, Tonttu !) pour parler de leur musique, de leur récent concert au Cernunnos, et d’autres sujets un peu moins conventionnels !
 
Tout d’abord, merci beaucoup d’avoir accepté cette interview !
 
Jani : Tout le plaisir est pour moi.
 
Jusqu’à présent, vous avez sorti 3 albums, comment décririez-vous votre musique à quelqu’un qui ne connaît pas votre groupe, ou même qui n’écoute pas particulièrement de metal ?
 
Eh bien, nous sommes étiquetés comme un groupe de folk metal mais nos chansons sont aussi assez rock, notre background est assez large. Je dirais que c’est du folk metal avec une touche d’originalité.
 
Le nom du groupe signifie « Épée sanglante », ce qui sonne assez agressif, tout comme certains titres de vos morceaux, mais à l’écoute, on ressent immédiatement ce côté fun, festif, on est un peu en mode yin-yang. Est-ce que selon toi c’est typique de l’esprit finlandais, quelque chose qui est à la fois vraiment sombre et en même temps léger ?
 
Oui, même si le nom du groupe veut dire « Épée sanglante », cela ne veut pas dire que notre musique est agressive, c’est juste... Nous faisons des choses sombres, mais aussi d’autres très festives. Il y a toujours un peu de lumière dans l’obscurité, tu vois ce que je veux dire [rires] ?
 
Tout le monde sait que la Finlande est une terre de metal, et la plupart du temps les gens attribuent cela au fait qu’il fait sombre et froid et que dans certaines régions, il n’y a pas grand-chose d’autre à faire... Mais je me demandais, selon toi, qu’est-ce qui fait qu’il y a, non pas, autant de groupes, mais surtout autant de bons groupes ?
 
Je n’ai tout simplement pas de réponse à cela [rires]. Je ne sais pas, c’est une question difficile...
 
Parmi tous les groupes finlandais en général et d’Oulu en particulier, qu’est-ce qui vous rend unique, c’est quoi la « Verikalpa touch » ?
 
Je pense que ce qui rend Verikalpa unique, c’est le fait que, même si nous sommes un groupe de folk metal, nous ne nous interdisons pas de faire d’autres choses. Il y a des riffs qui rappellent le hair metal, le rock ou d’autres trucs du genre. Nous ne nous restreignons pas. Notre folk metal est un mélange de genres. Le folk metal est la plus grande partie, mais c’est un mélange et nous ne nous interdisons rien, donc c’est ce qui nous différencie des autres, je pense.
 
Pour l’instant, vous avez sorti un nouvel album tous les deux ans, est-ce que vous conservez ce rythme, est-ce que vous travaillez sur le prochain ?
 
En fait, nous sommes déjà en cours d’enregistrement, c’est en bonne voie. On enregistre en ce moment les parties guitares lead, nous avons déjà enregistré la batterie, la basse et la guitare rythmique.
 
Tu connais déjà la date de sortie ?
 
Non, je ne sais pas de combien de temps la maison de disques aura besoin. Je ne peux rien dire à ce sujet [rires].
 
Pour l’instant, la plupart de vos concerts ont eu lieu en Finlande, est-ce que c’est difficile de jouer en dehors de la Finlande, surtout avec le Covid, et est-ce quelque chose que vous attendez avec impatience ?
 
Oui, absolument, notre objectif est de tourner dans différents pays et nous avons donné notre premier concert en Lituanie en août de l’année dernière, ce qui était génial, puis nous sommes venus en France et c’était notre deuxième concert à l’étranger. Donc, oui, c’est notre objectif, de tourner le plus possible !
 
À propos de cette date en France, c’était une bonne expérience ?
 
Oh oui. Mes collègues de travail m’ont demandé comment s’était passé mon voyage, et ma réponse a été : « Je vais déménager en France ! » [rires] C’était un super voyage et je ne suis pas près de l’oublier.

Vous avez eu le temps de visiter un petit peu ou vous êtes simplement restés le temps du concert ?
 
Non, en fait, nous sommes allés directement dans la zone du festival, puis à l’hôtel, puis directement à l’aéroport, donc nous n’avons pas vraiment pu découvrir, mais cela a suffi à me convaincre de venir plus souvent en France [rires].
 
Et nous vous attendons de pied ferme ! Où est-ce que vous aimeriez jouer, quel serait votre but ultime ? Et pour partager une scène, en admettant que vous puissiez choisir n’importe qui, ce serait quoi votre rêve ?
 
N’importe qui ? Kiss ! Je ne pense pas que ça va arriver [rires]. Mais oui... C’est un groupe que j’écoute depuis mes 5 ans, donc...
 
Vous avez fait quelques clips jusqu’à présent, c’est quelque chose que vous aimez ?
 
Oui, on aime bien. Toutes nos vidéos ont été réalisées par le même mec, et c’est toujours amusant à faire, c’est sympa.
 
Et maintenant quelques « questions bonus »... Est-ce qu’il vaut mieux écouter Verikalpa avant ou après le sauna ?
 
Je dirais avant, pendant et après !
 
J’étais sûre que t’allais dire ça ! [rires]
 
C’est la formule parfaite, oui !
 
Vos chansons parlent beaucoup de bière, est-ce que vous avez déjà pensé à créer votre propre bière ? La bière Verikalpa ?
 
En fait, nous en avons parlé, ce serait génial ! On est tous fans de bière dans le groupe, donc ce serait incroyable !
 
Si quelqu’un veut visiter Oulu, quelle est la meilleure période ?
 
Hum, je dirais l’été, l’été c’est génial. Ou en fait peut-être que l’automne est encore mieux, il commence à faire sombre mais les arbres ont encore des feuilles... c’est super beau. Allez, l’automne !

A few weeks ago, we had the great pleasure to have an interview with Jani Ikonen, founding member and singer of Verikalpa (with a special guest appearance of his cat, Tonttu) to talk about their music, their show at the Cernunnos festival in France and some more miscellaneous matters!
 
First of all, thank you so much for doing this interview, it means a lot.
 
Jani : Well, it’s my pleasure.
 
How would you describe your music to someone that doesn’t know your band, or even that doesn’t particularly listen to metal?
 
Well, we are labelled as a folk metal band but our songs are also pretty rocky, it’s a mixed background. I would say it’s folk metal with a twist.
 
The name of the band means “Bloody Sword“, which sounds pretty aggressive in a way, and so do some titles of the songs, but as soon as you listen to the band you feel that it’s a really fun, party-type music, so it’s a bit of a yin-yang. Would you say it’s typical of the Finnish spirit, something that is at the same time really dark and really fun?
 
Yeah, even if the band name is Bloody Sword it doesn’t mean that our music is wild, it’s just… We do some dark stuff, but it is also a party thing. It’s not that dark when it’s dark, you know what I’m saying [laughs].
 
It’s very well-known that there is a lot of metal bands in Finland, and most of the time people say it’s because it’s dark and cold and in some places there’s not much to do… But I was wondering, according to you, why is there, not so many bands, but so many good bands?
 
I just don’t have any answer to that [laughs]. I don’t know, that’s a tough question…
 
Amongst all the bands from Finland in general and Oulu in particular, what do you think makes you unique, what is the “Verikalpa touch”?
 
I think the unique part of Verikalpa is that even if we are a folk metal band, we don’t restrict ourselves from doing some other stuff as well. There are some riffs that are similar to hair metal, rock or stuff like that. We don’t restrict ourselves. Our folk metal is a mix of genres. Folk metal is the biggest part, but it’s a mix of genres and we don’t forbid ourselves to do anything, so that’s what makes us different from the others, I think.
 
For now, you have made a new album every two years, are you keeping up on the same rhythm, are you working on the next one?
 
Actually, we are recording the next album, it's in a good way right now. We are doing some lead guitars, we already have drums, bass and rhythm guitars recorded.
 
Do you know when it will be out?
 
No, I don’t know how long the record label will need. I can’t tell anything about that [laughs].
 
For now, most of your gigs have been in Finland, has it been difficult to play outside Finland yet, especially with Covid, and is it something you look forward to?
 
Yes, absolutely, our goal is to tour in different countries and we actually played our first show in Lithuania in August last year, which was awesome, and then we came to France and that was our second show abroad. So, yeah, that is our goal, get out there, you know!
 
About that show in France, was it a good experience?
 
Yes, it was. My coworkers at work asked me how my trip went, and my answer was like : “I’m gonna move to France !” [laughs] It was a fun trip and I’m going to remember it forever.
 
Did you have time to visit a bit or did you just stay for the show?
 
No, actually, we just went straight to the festival area and then to the hotel and then straight to the airport so we didn’t see anything really, but that was enough to convince me to come to France more often [laughs].
 
We’re definitely waiting for you! Where would you love to play, what would you be your ultimate goal, and if you’re sharing a stage, with whom would you like to play, if you had any choice in the world?
 
Any choice in the world? Kiss! I don’t think it’s gonna happen [laughs]. But yeah… It’s a band I’ve been listening to since when I was like 5 years old, so…
 
You’ve made a few video clips so far, Is that something you enjoy?
 
We do, yes. All our videos have been made by the same dude, and it’s always fun to go there and do our thing, it’s nice.
 
And now for some “Bonus questions”… Is it better to listen to Verikalpa before or after sauna?
 
I’d say before, during and after!
 
I was pretty sure you were going to say that [laugh].
 
That’s the perfect mix, yeah!
 
You sing about beer quite a lot, have you thought about creating your own beer? The Verikalpa beer?
 
Actually, we have talked about it, it would be great! Everyone in our band is a beer dude, so that would be fucking amazing!
 
If someone want to visit Oulu, what’s the best time?
 
Hum, I’d say Summer, Summer is great. Or actually maybe Fall is the best time, it’s starting to be dark but the trees still have leaves… then it’s beautiful. So, Fall!
